How's Your Wastewater Plant Doing?

Posted August 20, 2008 8:00 AM

New plant construction and upgrading of older water/wastewater systems appear to be booming in Europe and Asia because of stiffer regulations and expanding economies. Is the same true in North America or elsewhere in the world? If you are in the water or wastewater industry, share your outlook for pumps, controls, and the industry in general. Are you in a boom or a bust?

How Much Oil in the Bakken Formation?

Posted July 18, 2008 8:09 AM

In last month's Pump Technology newsletter, we ran a story about the Bakken Formation, a gigantic oil reserve under the wheat fields of North Dakota. The story noted that some estimates say the field contains 400 billion barrels of oil, nearly 10 times that of Saudi Arabia. One reader disagreed, noting that a recent USGS report says the formation holds only 3.65 billion barrels. Further research reveals much disagreement (Google "Bakken Formation" to see all the reports). Who do you believe? Why is there so much disagreement?

How did you get "into" pumps? Would you recommend a career as a pump engineer to your son or daughter?

The old saying goes, "You are what you drive." So, here's a nice easy blog to get you started on your career as a pump blogger: What kind of car do you drive? What kind of car would you like to drive? Why? Does this in any way relate to your career as a pump engineer? For example, are you a conservative engineer, or are you working at the leading edge of pump technology? Does this reflect your choice of car? After you get the hang of blogging, start your own thread on our pump blog.

Pump Away Greenhouse Gas?

Posted April 17, 2008 9:05 AM

Recent cap-and-trade proposals use economics to address the removal of CO2 from the emissions of coal-burning power plants and other greenhouse gas producers. Such proposals, however, bring into question long-term storage scenarios such as geologic sequestration. Is pumping CO2 into oil reserves or depleted coal seams a foolish idea, or one worth pursuing?
