Can an Electric Motorcycle Restructure How We Buy Transportation?

Posted August 23, 2009 8:46 PM by Milo

So, Would you buy this piece of "consumer electronics that you can ride?"

Here is the Link: BRAMMOENERTIA

More importantly, what does this company's sales model of selling through "Best Buy" portend for our future?

I ignored the Ford / Microsoft Synch Service through the Geek Squad FordSyncGeekSquad as just an indication about the difficulty of converting 'wrenches' into 'Electrogeeks.' (Or something less pleasant about dealers and their commitment to service competency...)

But now, I'm not so sure. If Automobiles and now motorcycles are now merely platforms for the consumer electronics they carry...

Can't forget- GM is selling cars online too. http://gm.ebay.com/

The Y Files are all about the impact of technology on our lifestyle and communities. This seems to be a watershed event.

Best Buy as purveyor of motorcycles? What's next? New operating system update software on Apple's iTunes or Appstore as a download?

More info: http://industry.bnet.com/auto/10002165/electric-bikes-for-sale-at-best-buy/

So, would you buy this piece of "consumer electronics that you can ride?" from Best Buy? Or a New Car on eBay?

And would you pay with PayPal?

Looks like a viable commuter/city bike.
50 mile range is rather low still, even for the Uk, never mind the wide open spaces of the US...
A step in the right direction tho'...as long as it's not raining.
What voltage does it run, and what will the leakage be like when its soaking wet? Hmmm I love the refreshing tingle as you grab the bars.
(This is from someone who was using an electric drill in the shower at the weekend and used the shower to cool the drill bit ...I was fitting a grab rail...all was fine until I put the drill down into the damp tray...I shouted for Mrs Cat to come and unplug it, as I felt a faint tingle....mmmmm I just love the tingle... Don't tell Andy Germany...he'll be castigating me endlessly about safety. I ricked my back too)

Buy it? Why I plan to build one! To poor to justify it this year though. But once the electric conversion of my friends ATV is done its quite high on the things to do list.

I am just using modified 36 -48 volt golf cart control systems for both. The top end speeds will not be as high as engine driven versions but their operating cost and just because I can factor still make it worth doing!

A electric motor cycle could be a very practical and useful transportation system for larger city applications where people that have to commute further distances and at higher speeds than the electric scooters and bicycles can do effectively.

Well, at one point Sears used to license and sell motorcycles, so its not exactly a new development. However, I don't like that they chose the Enertia as their bike of choice. 12 grand for a bike that can only go 50 miles between charges? At least Sears, back in the day, offered low end commuter bikes, and even they could go farther on a single tank of gas (look up the Sears Allstate bikes). Obviously, just gonna be a another status symbol for those that can afford the cost of a Harley with the range of a moped.

Don't really care who sells them. Best Buy or another electronic appliance store seems like a reasonable sales channel.

Nice looking bike with reasonable CITY performance. For 11K, one would expect to see some serious performance numbers. This bike's performance seems average at best.

I'd consider buying one if the price were in the 2-3K range, which would be equivalent to a small gas bike. Until prices drop or performance increases, I'll stick with my own e-conversion plans.

Here's a link that does not relate directly to e-bikes but the concept of this car manufacturer is equally relevant to bikes.

The executive vice president of this company says "we need a battery that far exceeds the current technology" and he's damn right.

However, I do agree to develop a good scooter or bike for city drive is a better option then wasting huge 'bikies' on equally short range cars.

With bikes you can short cut or curtail things in a traffic jam hence gain time and battery power as opposed to an electric-car.
