If You Were a Tree...

Posted August 31, 2009 7:40 AM

Journalist Barbara Walters was lampooned for asking the question of famous folks. Yet the concept behind the query seems fair. What symbol is most apt to represent a person, or even a category of people? Is there a symbol that fits mechanical engineers? Mechanical Engineering Magazine ran a poll asking for ideas. The response ranged widely, rather than zeroing in on a consensus. Even so, popular icons for M.E.'s were emerging: a wheel, an engine, a robot, meshing gears, and hex nut and bolt. What icon fits you? Are you a hex nut, or the friendly robot?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

I have a fondness for the Möbius strip.

A mathemetician confided
That a Möbius strip is one sided,
And you get quite a laugh
When you cut it in half,
For it stays in one piece when divided!

That's beautiful! And now for the musical Möbius

and the literary or architectural Möbius

They're everywhere.

As a robot I flirt with a desirable turtle. And feed flowers to the reptile I envy and love. Armored and slow, sometimes swimming they go. I'd watch them all day, and have nothing to say.

I consider myself to be turning into that single lone tree that stands in the middle of a pasture all busted up and gnarled from fighting with the world I exist in. I may not look majestic or grand but I have already sunk my roots in far deeper than most others ever can or will!

Rip and tare at me all you want and I will just grow back out of spite, because I can!

If I was a great big tree,
Nothin' much would bother me,
Except perhaps that flapping Crow...
Or Del might turn me to a Bow.

If I were a tree....

I would need arms and legs

To shoo those rotten pets away

The dogs from peeing on my trunk and feet

And the cats from sticking their nasty claws into my delicate bark and branches.
