How's Your Hearing?

Posted September 12, 2009 7:49 AM

Depending on whether hearing loss is mild or profound, the non-profit Better Hearing Institute states that yearly income loss for American workers can be $1,000 to $12,000 if nothing is done about it. While new digital hearing aids can run from $1,000 to $4,000 apiece, an average 3-5 year product life comes out to a cost of $3/day, according to U.S. manufacturer Sonic Innovations. If you needed a hearing aid would you get one?

It's a bit like glasses. If I can't function well enough without them, I will get them.

As far as the loss of income numbers go, that sounds like political hype.

As you age, nothing is 100%, eye-sight, hearing, stamina, physical mobility.

It makes it sounds so paltry, that why don't you get it correct. a few dollars a day here, a few dollars and there, to get you running at 100% or close to it. Why?

With the exception of regular check-ups, I look at the need more so, than try to keep things running at 100%

"If you needed a hearing aid, would you get one?" No. I find that the loss of hearing has actually improved my experience of the environment...Maybe if I lived in a rural area where I could listen to birds and crickets instead of traffic noise and rap music, maybe I would consider investing in one...

With the advent of mp3 players that jack in excess of 120 dB into your ear canals as well as auto and home systems that boast hundreds of watts, this is going to balloon into a problem of unfathomable proportion as the current population ages.

The best solution is prevention. Sadly, it is already too late for most people that are or will be victims of their own lack of foresight. I figured it out at 15 when I woke the next morning after my first rock concert and my ears were still ringing that I needed to protect my hearing. At 53 I still have nearly perfect hearing as a result.

Interesting to note that in the US, as in the UK, anything to do with health carries a huge price premium. When you can puchase a laptop computer for less than £300 you realise that the prices charged for hearing aids are obscene. These devices are mass produced - worlwide there are millions of deaf people.

Spectacles are another area where obscene prices are charged. When you can buy non prescription glasses for £15 why do opticians charge £50+ just for frames?

It's supply and demand. In one instance, demand equates to "want" which conveys a choice to do without. In the other instance we are dealing with need and so it is less of a matter of choice. Add in a healthy dose of greed and you have opportunism at its best.

I know from experience ( my wife has hearing difficulties) that some insurances won"t cover hearing aids) With the cost of a good set of digital ( something she requires) topping 10k, it is a struggle to balance having them or a car to some people. She has currently put off buying them since she has one that works. The interesting part is that insurance will pay for cochlear (sp?) implants at a greatly higher price. What am I missing here?
