Head for the Clouds

Posted October 19, 2009 8:09 AM

Everyone is talking and the media is buzzing about the huge advantages of storing your data on the "cloud" so you can get to them from anywhere in the world. Proponents assure us that safety is their primary concern, and your private files will remain just that. But no system is 100% secure. Balancing convenience with security will represent the next great challenge in corporate computing. How much of your data will you be entrusting to the cloud? Where will you draw the line? Why? What security measures will you take? How confident are you that your measures will be enough?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Engineering Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Engineering Management today.

How much of your data will you be entrusting to the cloud? - None.

Where will you draw the line? - Right here right now.

Why? - Trust no one.

What security measures will you take? Security? My 12Ga Benelli ought to do the trick.

How confident are you that your measures will be enough? You want to find out??

'Cloud' data storage has major problems in so much as there is always human error, and 'events' do occur where data becomes corrupt and or lost, and information that you delete is not always deleted, therefore the risks are high. Nevertheless it is a convenient fast way of working, and large low cost storage facility, and will accelerate information flow, but if you have sensitive material as is the way of most business, it is problematic. It needs to be considered as you would a 'product' that one purchases. 'Caveat Emptor' applies.

If traveling and needing access to your information, travel light, travel with security in mind, backup, backup and backup. If you have your server in your office that you can access from your remote secure personal gateway you are on the right track. Make sure you use encryption.

If you are not tech savy, and need to keep your own information safe and backed up, or want to work remotely, it is best to find a serious face to face professional that can help you tailor a solution for your home or office. The cloud has holes and the silver lining is not all it seems to be and it is your data that is out 'There'.

Personally, I love the web/net, and couldn't do without it, but one needs to be aware that the interface that most of us see is just one aspect, and it is really a very hostile place in which security is necessary, and at times the best security is not enough.

I'm afraid "keeping your data in the 'clouds' " may turn out like keeping your head up your ?
