Hidden Health Costs of Energy

Posted November 02, 2009 7:29 AM

The hidden costs of U.S. energy production, such as health impacts of air pollution, were an estimated $120 billion in 2005. The National Research Council report quantifying these damages concludes that coal-fired power plants, which produce over half of the nation's electricity, accounted for $62 billion in hidden damages linked to air pollutants. Life-cycle damages of wind power and normal nuclear reactor operation are deemed negligible in comparison to fossil fuels. Take a deep breath and offer up some remedial policy prescriptions.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Healthcare Manufacturing, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Healthcare Manufacturing today.

Energy reforms are very important to sustain a viable global environment. Energy reforms include more Research and Development in Solar and Wind Energy derivatives.. and also finding more resources where energy can be derived from

A lot needs to be done in the awareness of the public and society at large. The electricity produced is used by US the end consumers.

Let us not forget that our prosperity is due in large measure to having an abundant supply of affordable energy. It is nowadays electrical energy that powers the machinery that frees our personal time and energy to pursue the knowledge and new ideas of our future.

Without cheap, abundant energy resources, we either stagnate, or go backwards as we have to give up some labor saving device to "save" energy. It will take energy to clean / convert water to potable standards. Yes, I can go to the library to research, use a pad and pencil to draw my plans and work my calculations, and save it all in a set of files. But I think we would all agree that our time and money is better spent using 300 watts of power to run my computer and do this all here.

Therefore, while you continue to research wind and solar to get it up to the efficiencies to make it affordable, exploit known and proven technologies like clean coal and nuclear to power our way towards that goal.
