Robots Rule?

Posted November 02, 2009 7:33 AM

At last month's PackExpo show in Las Vegas, your correspondent saw a fully automated robotic blackjack dealer complete with articulated arms and a vision system. Displacement of human dealers can't be far behind as these robots will work 24/7 and don't require health and pension benefits. Is the increased productivity delivered by these and other robots an unmitigated benefit to society at large?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Power Generation & Distribution, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Power Generation & Distribution today.

Whenever a job is taken by a robot, the person who becomes unemployed will have to retrain for a job, not already taken by a robot. As fewer and fewer positions must have the creativity of a human, our society will have more and more unemployed to take care of. Most people are not in the workforce only to make a living , but depend on their jobs to give them a feeling of self worth. If we intend to go to an all-robot work force, we must change society's mind set, that working individuals are more worthy than the unemployed.
