Online University

Posted June 08, 2010 7:20 AM

With the Internet tool, we access enormous volumes of data, we communicate, and we socialize. In fact, our immersion in the Internet now extends to higher education, with online degrees beginning to outnumber traditional classroom-earned educations. What's your experience, as manager, hiring executive, or student? Are Internet-educated engineers on par with those from traditional brick-and-mortar schools?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

Online university is great for some sectors, but technology I believe that are limits.

There is nothing that can surpass lab work, with input/results from other people (students) successes and failures in the lab. That you experiences from this interaction.

Prior to working on an advanced degree I interviewed several recruiters, Engineering Directors, and a number of HR people.

All expressed great skepticism about *most* online degree programs in general, less hesitation about advanced degrees.

This hesitation could be coming from recruiters ignorance or lack or exposure to these online courses. Have they told you about real specific experiences which shaped their opinion this way? Unfortunately the word hesitation tells me that they probably have not had any experiences to tell about. This is just based on personal preference. But hey these ignorant people have power to hire and we have to go by that until some venturer starts hiring people based on person's knowledge instead of where he has obtained his degree.
