I don't know about the issue over in the UK but a few of my local chain stores started offering those green cloth eco bags for $1 each and 5% off your purchase.

Any time I spent over $20 I would happily pay the $1 for the bag to get my additional 5% off. Then take it home and toss it in my boiler for fuel, just like I do with the free plastic bags, and buy another one the next time I was at the store and had to make a purchase of over $20.

I don't know how many eco bags I bought and burned but I know that for a while 'going green' was saving me a pile of cash on my purchases!

Of course, we all know by now about flouting/ignoring/thumbing the nose at greenie regulations. I bet tcmtech is personally responsible for raising the ambient temperature by 0.00000018°F (0.0000001°C) every year, or ten years, or hundred years....

I don't know what my actual 'carbon footprint' is but once I estimated what mine may be compared to the supposed average and I can proudly say I undo more than just a few bus loads of greenies efforts!

You ever seen a semi load of old tires and a few dozen 55 gallon barrels of used paint system cleaner, used oil, and highly flammable mystery mix go up in one bonfire at 2 Am on a cloudy night? I have.

The making of the standard-type of thin, lightweight plastic bags is a decent use for petroleum. I reuse mine at the store, or I stuff them with trash, recyclables, or items for storage.

Seriously though - are the stores and government really altruistic? Someone is making a buck on this stuff, right?

My local supermarket uses biodegradable plastic bags. Their prices are still comparable to the major supermarkets.

Whenever the issue of supermarket bags is raised, the option of biodegradable bags never seems to get a mention.

My plastic bags are reused as bin liners. If I didn't have them I would have to buy plastic bin bags for the purpose.

This certainly raises the probability that the move to charge for bags has far more to do with another profit making stream than it has to do with the environment.

Apparently the greens are falling for the spin.

Supermarket bags do not need to be a hazard to the environment. Degradable bags remove this problem.

A news update showed the multiple use of grocery bags is beginning to show health hazards. Wash with soap and water in very hot water ...! Not so green ... The idea of burning the thing is not that bad. Recycle them into "grenn logs" and sell them at the grocery store and carry them out in another reusable bag, there it is ! the "infinite motion" . I reuse them for my hockey wet stuff along with my plastic bag from a light beer can box ...

I don't recommend washing a colored cloth bag with the whites ...
