How Social Are You?

Social-media tools are all the rage these days, and many engineers use Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to keep in contact with friends, family and colleagues and look for jobs and business opportunities. Many others, however, find them to be a real waste of time. Have you tried using one or more of these tools? Did you find them useful or useless? If you are using them, how are you using them and how do you find the time?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wire & Cable Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wire & Cable Technology today.

I find LinkedIn and CR4 as 2 forums or "social sites" that have been extremely valuable in finding business opportunities as well as keeping in touch, sharing & gathering knowledge, and just keeping up with colleagues and interests in general.

Spacebook and MyFace have been a gross waste of my time and I have trouble being a twitter and what that word represents. I for one do not want to be known as a twit. Like texting, what can one convey in 150 or so character blips?

I use the technology to learn, gather information, share information, and to test my knowledge. CR4 is an awesome site for learning and sharing. Thanks to all the people who make good contributions. I find that social networking sites can suck up a lot of time. I keep in touch with only a few people as things can get overwhelming. One internet technology guru "Phil Mcrae of Alberta" I saw at a conference said that one can only have meaningful social contact with a maximum of 150 people. It makes sense.
