Last week, NASA launched the space shuttle Discovery for the
39th and final time. The 11-day mission will
deliver two key components to the International Space Station (ISS), and put
the first humanoid robot into space. The Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM)
and Express Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC4) will provide the ISS with spare parts and
storage capacity. Robonaut 2 (R2), a dexterous anthropomorphic robot designed
and built at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, will be deployed on a
fixed pedestal inside the ISS.
As with previous shuttle launches, CR4 is pleased to bring
you a series of launch images from NASA photographer Joby Minor. These will
probably be the last images that we receive from Joby, who has already begun a
new assignment as the space shuttle program winds down.
