Honda CA160 Motorcycle – Restoration Part 6 - (Pics)

Posted April 10, 2007 9:56 PM by stilljester

There is nothing sweeter then that first ride. Primed the carb and two kicks later came that sweet Honda sound. Sorry it took so long to make this post but I'm been very busy at work- Enjoy the pics...

Sweet!

All you need is a stock front fender for it to be prefect.

I've got the stock fender too--I was really on the fence about the non-stock fender, but now that the bikes complete I like this look a lot. Thanks for the kind words:-)

Your progress and success are inspirational. I just acquired a 1966 CA 160 in considerably better condition (but considerably more expensive) than what you had to start with and would like to end up with a machine as nice as yours.

Do you have a any tips or info on where you got parts, paint, advice, manuals, etc.? I know that I will need mufflers and probably some other small parts. I thought that the paint scheme on mine was original being completely red. However, I really like the looks of the side covers in white and the silver around the headlight. Is that what they looked like originally or is that your own styling? Were you able to find pics of original paint schemes?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Well first congratulations on your fine purchase. I think you'll find working on old Honda is quite rewarding if you haven't owned one in the past.

The paint scheme was my own doing. I looked at lot of pictures, articles and I found that there was too much of the same color for my tastes - I like the two-tone of silver and red mixed with just a touch of chrome.

My best recommendation for articles and books etc is Google. Search for terms like CA95, CA160, Honda Dream and you'll find many references to the CA160 buried inside. I'll look through my old favorites and see if I can't find a couple links for you.

If you looking for parts look no farther then eBay it really is one of the best resources out there. I made many great part contacts from emailing the seller(s) outside of eBay and talking about my project and parts I was looking for. 9 times out of 10 they have what you need it's just not listed. I ended up buying an entire CA95 with a gentleman in MI I met from eBay just for a complete set of chrome; he needed the rest of the bike. I think you'll find on average Honda owners really are some of the nicest people you'll meet

Hey, good job on the project.I came across this on a Google search and it's just what I was looking for as far as other folks doing a restoration on an old CA160.My Dad bought the one I'm restoring brand new in 1968.He was in a Shriner's parade unit and they bought 18 of them at one time.Out of the original 18, as of the late seventies, there were no engine related failures.I rode it to high school in the seventies for a year and never had any problems. After that it sat in a shed until about three years ago when my Dad decided he was going to start riding it again. We dug it out , cleaned it off, cleaned out the tank and carb, put new gas in it and changed the oil, replaced the battery and believe it or not-It fired after the third kick! Amazing machine!

To make a long story short he lost interest and was going to sell it and I ended up with it.It's gonna take a while but I'm going to restore it.It was originally white but I'm looking to paint it black.I, like you have found numerous parts on ebay with the exception of side covers and a battery.I am having a time finding a battery.I spoke to the local Honda shop and may have found the right one, but it remains to be seen at this point.

I look forward to being involved in this blog and wish you good luck on your project.

ps it only has 3000 original miles on it!!

Sorry your bike was stolen - thief is one thing I'll never understand. If you want something you should work hard, save and buy what you desire - you'll certainly appreciate it more once you have it. Enjoy you new bike!!

Nice...

Reminds me of when I was a Lad, my mate had an early Honda which looked similar (Benley 125?).

He got it off the farm lad who had put deisel in it ....seized it solid.

We took off the head, took off the cylinder bolts and supported the weight of the engine by holding the cylinder block and slowly drifted the pistons down the bores with a piece of 2x2 timber! Crude but effective! He got it rebored..new pistons...ran like a rocket (compared to our 150cc Lambrettas!)

Hey ho halcyon days!

This is an old farm trick to breaking loose a stuck cylinder...adapt a grease zert to screw into the spark plug hole making sure both intake and exaust valves are closed.. pour a couple ounces of amonia in the cylinder and let soak for about 20 minits.. then with a pnematic grease gun fill the cylinder with grease untill the piston starts to move.. You'll be surprized what 100lbs psi. can do with a stuck piston.. AND no impact on the Big end bearing or cases..

Is there a place or site that can lead me to the parts of a motorcycle

like parts of a motorcycle for dummies or something. Please let me know

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Incredible! Did you find that CA95 parts fit the CA160 pretty consitantly?

Great job on the restoration. I have a 1966 CA 160 that I am about to start restoring. My story is very similar to many of the others. My father bought the bike used in 1967, and I got my motorcycle license on it in 73. I rode it some in college, but frankly, I was a little embarassed to be seen on it when my friends were riding CB-350's and the like. The bike has been sitting in my parents garage and it has not run since 1978. Any tips on trying to start it up after 30 years?

Thanks for the inspiration

I found a CA160 running for a couple hundred bucks. I'm wondering if anybody could tell me where I could find pan screws for the emblems, and a battery for it. I'd appreciate just about any other information on parts. Nice work.
