Guidelines for Mobile Device Manufacturers

Posted June 09, 2011 8:00 AM by embeddedreporter

Who hasn't upgraded to a new mobile device (by agreeing to a two year service guarantee) only to discover a few months later that their friends have just purchased a device that makes theirs obsolete? If you think that this is hard on the consumer, think of the challenges and risks that it places on the manufacturers of such devices.

As processor costs continue their downward spiral, and as fickle consumers of mobile technologies are increasingly ready to move to more interesting and useful displays and functionalities, consumer-based markets are becoming characteristically disposable. New platforms appear nearly monthly characterized by more functional and entertaining GUIs that enable the technologically disadvantaged to easily link to social sites, read email, text and perform acts of information magic.

In this paper, the multidimensional aspects of these problems that confront mobile device manufacturers are discussed. Guidelines are offered that will enable manufacturers to streamline developments and take advantages of previously developed and proven code, get to market faster and contain costs.
