Which, Not If, You'll Wear 3D Glasses

Posted June 09, 2011 3:43 PM

TV makers have mostly stopped one-upping each other with improbably bigger screen sizes. Instead, a battle royal is developing over whether 3D glasses should be active or passive. Both technologies cost roughly the same, both have problems with crosstalk, and no-glasses systems are, alas, out of the running. Is this the next Blu-ray vs. HD DVD battle for market domination? And do you, the end user, care?

Do you prefer to watch with active or passive glasses? Have you tried the different technologies? Does your appearance while wearing the glasses matter to you? And is 3D TV worth wearing glasses at all?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Thread title is wrong. Which is incorrect if you never plan to own a 3D TV in the first place.

Does this mean that my three, current 2D TVs will be obsolete and I'll be forced to buy a 3D even if I don't want to? As in the switch to digital from analog?

I don't need no stinking 3D TV.

My girlfriend can not watch 3-D as it makes her extremely nauseous. I suspect that she is not alone. One internet survey reported as many as 25% of viewers experienced headaches, dizziness, or nausea when watching 3D.

Forcing people to view only 3D would cut deep into viewership pretty quickly.

Not to mention those of us who already have to wear glasses and would prefer to NOT have to have 2 pair on at the same time.

Agreed, I have a friend that as a result of a childhood accident is legally blind in one eye... Which translates to no 3D for her!

'Which, not if, you'll wear 3d glasses'

. .

Do 3d glasses impair the ability to write coherent titles?

. .

The title of this blog, as written, is awkward (and that is being generous). Yoda would even cough at this one.

. .

As written, the title is equivolent to saying

'Which you'll wear 3d glasses, not if you'll wear 3d glasses'

. .

'Which you'll wear 3d glasses' ???

. .

That doesn't make a lick of sense.

. .

All that is required is to take a moment to read aloud what one has written....leading to a slight change in wording, producing a title that makes sense, and looks much better (at least without 3d glasses on).

. .

'Which, not if, 3d glasses will be worn.'

It was written by a student of Yoda.

Or is that; by a student of Yoda, written, it was?

Whenever I am having a stressful moment at work I pull this one up and promptly fall out of my chair laughing.

One is forced to wonder if the original writer indulges frequently in the use of 3-D glasses.

If so, the title lends proof to the claim that 3-D can alter the brain.

3D is the next 'quadrophonic stereo'; it's the next mini-CD; it's the next DAT; it's the next beam-index CRT; it's the next cockpit projection display; it's the next 'New Coke'; it's the next Iridium satellite phone system; it's the latest technology gimmick that most people don't want and that really only appeals to a niche market.

Quadrophonic "stereo" (?) was before it's time, and failed only because of the limited means of delivering it. It's been reborn as 5.1 surround sound, and has been a big hit, at least with movies.

Maybe he should have said quadraphonic headphones. Yes, they were real.

"(It was)...before it's time, and failed only because of the limited means of delivering it."

In this case, exactly. I think there will be a day when 3D video will be be commonplace, in homes, with no need for special glasses. The current methods for generating 3D TV are headed for technology's dustbin.

And there is a bit more to 5.1 surround sound; reborn in the sense of nearly being a whole new species.

BTW, 'Quadraphonic stereo' (I misspelled it with an o) is a correct term: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadraphonic_sound

I already wear prescription glasses. I WILL NOT wear a second pair of glasses just to watch TV. There simply isn't anything on that would make it worth the hassle. On the day that my 2D, Analog TV quits working (we have a cable box to receive digital) due to a requirement for 3D equipment, that will be the day I get rid of the TV altogether and do something more useful with my time.

If they want me to watch 3D, it will have to be without glasses.

I watch most everything with active 3D. Yes, both my eyes still work thank goodness. I couldn't give a rat's glutes about 3D TV. Other than keeping up with the lamestream media's version of current events, I have too many other useful things to do than sitting down in front of the boob toob.

This is a (big?) fight over nothing.

3D glasses make my butt look big....Therefore I refuse to wear them.

Hate 3D movies/TV? Get headaches? You are not alone! My clever nephew came up with a solution. Check it out:

3D glasses are an insidious plot by the New World Order to control peoples minds and enslave them. It's an idea they got from the Spongebob Squarepants movie when Plankton used Chum Bucket helmets to rule the world. Don't fall for it. If you do wear these glasses, wear a tin foil hat to beam the subliminal mind control frequencies back to outer space to disable the mother ship.

Hate 3D. Was (and still am) falling in love with HD. The newer movies are so crystal clear. I'd much rather see more movies to exploit qualities to make it look mindblowingfully (made up word) beautiful, rather than trick the mind into thinking something might hit you in the face. If you want to see depth go to a play.

Maybe someday 3D will take it's run but I don't believe it is now.

I think they would have better luck selling 4D systems equipped with fans, sprinklers, chairs, tvs, sound system, and oh yea NO GLASSES

What a wonderful collection of comments, mostly GAs. Great. But somebody has to play the devil's advocate.....

Life is analogue. Not digital. We have learnt to live with that, since the super engineers shrank the intervals to imperceptible levels.

i used to work in a 2D design environment as dictated by hard-copy drawings. Last 10 years has been 3D CAD on my PC. Now i can't imagine any other way of working.

So what is wrong with 3D TV ? Ok, glasses are a pain in the a$$. But if holographic TV was available without any glasses, would you not go for it ? We live in 3D after all !!!

If i have to wear glasses to see at all, what is wrong in wearing one pair to see 3D on TV?
