Will Nano Technology Become the Next "Natural"?

Posted June 10, 2011 9:21 AM

Marketers of consumer goods are always looking for the next big "hook." For example, with high-fructose corn syrup out of favor, we now see the spectacle of soft drink makers proudly proclaiming that their dentition-rotting products contain "real sugar." So what about nano technology? In the past couple of months we've seen nano technology touted in hair care products and dog beds. Will we see nano technology exploited as the next "new new thing" in consumer goods? Does the typical consumer know enough yet about nano technology to make it an effective differentiator? Will we see hucksters making false claims about their products being based on nano technology?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Nano Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Nano Technology today.

The value of anything, be it technology, movies, a book, is inversely proportional to the volume of hype being published. Since it is impossible to open a paper or a magazine or a web site without encountering "nano" something, I would suggest NOT investing in it, if it has "nano" in it's name. "Micro" seems to be OK- it has mostly dropped off the hype radar...

Warner--That rang a bell--With summer upon us, I was looking at buying some new sunscreen, and notice "Micro-zinc oxide particles" as part of the "Advanced new ingredients"--Then read on a Natural type website, that those particles could be bad for you, as they are absorbed by your skin, into your body--It would be interesting to get the real lowdown..

If it sells the product then why not?

It's amazing that everyone has a smartphone with internet access these days but no one does a quick product search before buying some unknown product.

I subscribe to a couple of nano newsletters. I think quite a bit of it will enter our lives. I think for the most part it's still early. We live in a time when buzz words like "Nano, Green and Organic" will command a premium at the checkout counter.

If it doesn't perform why pay more for a fancy package, I can't see the nano particles as it is!

I have no problem with marketing--I have a problem with the "Science" of the marketing , and how the product is promoted--If these products are safe, then I do want to see the labels, with the required testing, so that I can evaluate what to , or not, put into or onto my body--Who is to say what is effective, and at the same time safe, rather than the opposite? The FDA? The Dermatological Institute? These were the guys who told us that various chemicals were safe, then later found to be detrimental (PABA)--What is person to do? What research can you trust, when the Markerters are paying for the results of the research?

Nano It's just a word, a prefix to be exact denoting size. Just as words have been used to sell in the past. New terms like nano technology sell. I general most consumers drawn to the New, Hip, or Hype. Even if they don't understand it and most could care less.

There has always been snake oil salesmen looking for a their pot of gold, that will never change.

Just as there will always be lawyers looking for a piece of that action.

So in the end it will all work out.

So until it does if you are worried about it do some research before you buy.

As pointed out by cwarner, hype is the name of the game. I would also venture to say that similar to the inverse rule mentioned, if you want to know if a product is really good, it will be available on TV for $19.95. And you will get your order doubled for that price!

Can't help the cynicism. Our culture is pervaded by such nonsense that it is hard not to be skeptical anymore. Even more depressing, is this stuff wouldn't be marketed this way if it wasn't working. So now we've got an indictment, of sorts, of John Q Public to boot.

What I can't help wondering is, if the majority of people we know agree how much hype there is in the marketplace of almost ALL products, who is it doing the marketing? Is it symptomatic of a "generation?" Or what?
