How Do You Manage On-the-Job Stress?

Posted July 06, 2011 6:00 AM

Students of theater advise that when you stop getting stage fright, it is time to retire. At the same time, if it gets so bad that you can't function, find a different activity. Job stress works much the same way. Experts contend that some stress serves as a driver to perform at your best, but too much can interfere with your effectiveness and your productivity. What kinds of stresses do you encounter at work? Are you under constant stress, or does it wax and wane? How and why? How often do you feel that stress will overwhelm you? How do you respond? How does your experience differ from that of your coworkers?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication today.

I used to do yoga, but a doctor showed me that just beating subordinates reduces hypertension much better.

While it's true that certain jobs are inherently stressful, people can also choose to be stressed. I have deadlines and I work some overtime to meet those deadlines. But really, I can only do so much in a day. The work will still be there tomorrow. Unfortunately, there are managers out there that believe, as was said, that "the beatings will stop once morale improves". The job would surely be less stressful without that kind of person watching over you.

Sometimes the job stress gets a little high and I look around for a way to vent some frustration off before I really go goofy .

About the only stress reliever I can find is CR4.

Here at CR4, I just sort of blend in... , the day melts away and everything is better. Thanks, guys.

How is that for sappy!

Or arrow in my case.
The knowledge that I can always simply stand up and walk out the door has often been a great comfort.
There have been times when the stress has become too great, and I've recognised the start of atypical behaviour, fortunately having good support from family and colleagues helped me to get away and change job.

Then, give all your money to L Ron's friends.

Stress produces adrenalin in the bloodstream. A small amount of adrenalin improves reaction time (something to do with fear/flight response to our ancestors seeing wild animals, check your first semester anthropology lecture notes for more details), too much adrenalin freezes the brain. I used to tell my kids going into an examination, a little apprehension is good, too much apprehension is bad. Learn the science and use it to your advantage.

'Good stress' usually comes from self motivation or a good team ethic.
'Bad stress' is usually counter productive and comes from being micro managed or being false deadlines (that's a classic).
I recently had a job which really had to be done by August last... I did it, of course it then sat idle for 7 months. You can imagine how it figures in my priorities now it's been picked up again.
I will go the extra mile for the team or to do some intricate work on a bow, or some bit of software if I'm interested and motivated.
If I don't see the same level of committment from above I will rapidly turn off.

I realise that a young guy with a familly can't afford to raise one finger and walk.

Stress can be deadly if not controlled. It can cause hypertension, high blood pressure, irritation, diabetes and many problems. So how to control it?. Here are few tips:-

1.Relaxation, one should relax while working in stressful environment. Just switch off your mind and take deep breath and release it slowly after few seconds.

2.Learn yoga exercises such as "Shav Asana (lie down like a dead person)". Of course you should do under supervision of yoga instructor.

3.Walk around the office for few minutes to overcome monotony.

4.Work without any fear, this is main cause of developing stress, fear about not able to complete the project in time, fear of getting fired.

5.Try to be jovial, cut some jokes with friends.

6. Keep cool as if ice bag is always on your head.

May be some of the above points may help you to control your stress in present days of competition and rat race.

Re: How Do You Manage On-the-Job Stress?

In my position of responsibility stresses come from quite a few different areas; direct reports, new tasks/projects to take on, existing projects in the works, the everyday run of the mill fires to put out, people who want tasks done but don't have very good people skills or don't know how to communicate very well, the list goes on.

In the book Adversity Quotient by Paul Stoltz the author gives tips for handling adversity. The gist of the book is that if we can make a logical, measured response to a situation rather than simply reacting to it we will do better. One of the keys he talks about is asking some questions; what is my ownership, did I cause the problem, how can we fix the problem, etc.?

Another good idea is from Chris Brady, co-author of the Best-Selling Launching a Leadership Revolution and a number of other books. The idea is Circle of Concern and Circle of Influence. Basically it is keeping things in proper perspective about what I can personally control. Example, don't worry about the weather, you can't control it. Just let the things you can influence in and don't let the other things outside of that take up emotional space in your life.

Control what you can with systems and processes so that things that come up on a regular basis don't have to be handled and decided upon each time they come up.

Know why you're willing to endure or work through the stressful situations. If you have a high goal or purpose that you are working toward you can accept and handle more. Zig Ziglar says, "keep your eye on the prize, not on the price."

Read a good book that relaxes you.

Don't spend much time watching or listening to the news. Most of it is negative which ends up draining us even more emotionally. Being emotionally bankrupt makes the next things that come along seem even worse. That's a destructive cycle.

Listen to music that relaxes you.

Like has been mentioned; physiological things like breathing exercises, get rest, exercise, take a break from the surroundings that you deal with the stress in on a regular basis.

Get a hobby that distracts our minds from the rigors of responsibility.

If it becomes debilitating to us it might be best to quit the job that is causing the stress. Get into a new environment.

Everyone naturally handles stress differently and has different tolerance levels. We can learn though to handle more of it and better by doing some learning to understand what it is and how it affects us. For me, that is best done reading and listening to audios that deal with handling the rigors of life.

When feeling stressed or angry, count to 100,000 before acting. This will usually let anger subside and in the workplace may also get you fired for lack of productivity.
