Engineering Love Machines

Posted July 07, 2011 1:10 PM

The idea of robots acquiring enough artificial intelligence, emotion, and other human characteristics to outperform humans has terrified and inspired mankind since the first days of science fiction. Besides man competing with robots, fiction over the years has also posited the possibility of human-robot compatibility of hooking up. Now, a project in Singapore is trying to turn fiction into fact, giving human-robot love a chance by giving robots artificial hormones. This may allow them to have "feelings," to give affection, or to become bored, jealous, or angry. Do you think robot love can be engineered?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

"...giving human-robot love a chance by giving robots artificial hormones." Artificial hormones? Really? Where will the switch be located?

"This may allow them to have "feelings," to give affection, or to become bored, jealous, or angry." Oh, no. No, no no. Pass. No thanks.

I was thinking more like the Orgasmatron. I'm just sayin'.

The most obvious, and worst, problem that would arise from giving robots any hint of emotion is that it would probably reflect the programmers own emotional existence. That is a danger because most programmers are abnormal as far as thought processes and priorities go, in addition to having fundamentally different concepts of reality. That is why there are so many problems with software. Most of the OS products from the biggest producer in the US certainly serve to validate this assertion.

Aside from that, the very concept of hormones and machinery is an example of futility.

Consider the probable outcome of a fight between any human and a robot with a 16 foot work circle and a 60 foot per second move rate.

That sounds like a lot of other science fiction movies... where the robot has feelings, and realizes the only way for a happy peaceful planet is to rid it of the disease of humans...

Really bad... bad... idea... Who thinks of this stuff? Artificial hormones? Angry robots? No thanks.

Yea great idea. Give a 300 ton industrial robot feelings what is the worst thing that could happen? Check some Japanese anime sometime.

Feelings to a robot is one (idiotic) thing.

Artificial hormones (to work on you, not the robot) is another idiocy.

WHO comes up with these things in the first place?

Members of a loony bin???

So,assuming you have created a "fembot",i would ask why and to help whom ? Surely it wouldn't help whoever it's aimed at by supplying a false sense of reality ,unleashing a tide of social cripples .The programming could be fairly simple,it could just do the opposite of what you do,change the Channels for the hell of it and run off with your best Buddy for good measure ! Being serious for a moment though,if you could manufacture "feelings" would/could you award Sentience and therefore human rights to a robot. An Ethical and Legal nightmare by the sounds of it and i'm sure there would be people willing to provide programming of "immoral or degrading activities ",I think the whole idea is the brainchild of smart Lawyers ,Or am i just being cynical

I'm sure it would be easier to program robots to pretend they have feelings. Robot con artists? Why not.

My body gives me my daily dose of natural hormones at around 5am. Robot or not, she wouldn't be too happy at me for waking her up at that time.

It is probably very unsafe to put emotions into a machine, since it is a given that such would be done by humans, who have their own peculiarities. The capacity for other emotions would probably be added unintentionally, but it would certainly happen. So then what happens when a strong robot gets angry? Picture an industrial robot throwing engine blocks around.

In addition, robots are mostly used to handle jobs that need to be done the same every time, and having any emotions would seriously interfere wit that.

I might consider their services in the lines of counseling, or maybe they might also need conselling during emotional breakdown. An angry robot maybe tolerated; who can tolerate a crazy robot.
