Living With Batteries

Posted July 08, 2011 6:00 AM

Does the rate of battery use turn you off certain mobile electronics? Do you have a preference for rechargeables over alkaline batteries, or do you long for the day when every device can be recharged via USB? Or is this a non-issue, and you don't care if your excellent device goes through batteries like a champion at a pie eating contest?

Until we reach the technological nirvana of everlasting, lightweight, nontoxic, cheap, and compostable batteries, we'll have to deal with the vagaries of power management in our mobile electronics. What is most important to you in a battery? Up-front cost? Ease of recharging? Long shelf life? Easy disposal? Something else?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Does the rate of battery use turn you off certain mobile electronics? Not really.

Do you have a preference for rechargeables over alkaline batteries, or do you long for the day when every device can be recharged via USB? I prefer rechargeable, but dislike the price.

Or is this a non-issue, and you don't care if your excellent device goes through batteries like a champion at a pie eating contest? I'd prefer to be the one eating pie....especially blueberry or mincemeat.

What is most important to you in a battery:

  • Up-front cost? Yes, I wouldn't mind so much if the useful life was longer
  • Ease of recharging? Yes
  • Long shelf life? Yes, what's the point of buying a bunch on sale in anticipation of my kids future toys only to find out they are no good a few years from now.
  • Easy disposal? Sure, why not? Or better yet, how about a battery that doesn't need to be disposed of? When you no longer need it, turn it in so someone else can use it.
  • Something else? none that come to mind.
