Electricity to Power Formula 1 Cars in 2013?

Posted August 03, 2011 10:08 AM

Formula 1 may be the pinnacle of traditional gas-powered racing, but it's getting closer to going electric, according to Engadget. It was announced last year that the sport would be moving to a hybrid four-cylinder turbocharged engine in 2013, with enough electric power to speed each car through the pit lane. Purists are outraged — are they justified? Would going electric be a good idea for the sport?

I doubt it. Additional weight, complexity, cost, lower energy density, etc. But we are all too familiar with the pandering to political correctness.

My first thought was to agree with you.

As I consider, it might well be a good thing. Many automotive advancements come from innovations developed for racing.

An internet search did not give me any hits on any current F1 races that are electric cars only. Do you know of any?

Many innovations for performance started in racing, but efficiency hadn't been a large part of the equation. I don't believe racing's involvement in hybrids will exceed the R&D spending already being spent on mass market cars. I see this change similar to defense electronics. For many years, defense (and aerospace) electronics drove the industry as a whole with innovations in defense trickling down to the consumer markets. That whole notion is now turned on its head and the consumer (and telecom) markets in large part drive what electronics are being used in defense and aerospace. Admittedly, we will still have our rad-hard, extended temperature range and so forth, but what's available is largely driven by those things produced for the telecoms and consumer electronics.

I recall a few years back, someone ran an electric "F1" car for a few laps strictly as a demonstation but I am not aware of any competitive classes at this point.

Any energy conversion is most efficient from the source (methanol, diesel etc) straight to the drive of the F1. Every other intermediate conversion is added loss. Battery and electrical motor is added weight - added loss. NAH!

The small airplane is similarly sensitive to weight / power. Most all are gas powered. An occasional diesel and electrical experimental. Hybrid is ruled out. Too heavy.

A few pure electric cars show impressive acceleration and run for a lap or three. But there is no endurance in batteries at F1 loads.

And the last time I looked I was no kind of purist, unless sticking to the facts and basic physics count. In those departments, I am.
