How Important is Multidisciplinary Collaboration?

Electronics and software play a growing role in most of the devices and machines produced today. As a consequence, some companies are placing greater value on upfront multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize design and manufacturing processes. Proponents of mechatronics believe that greater integration between these two areas reduces production costs and increases quality. In your opinion, does multidisciplinary collaboration pay off, or is the value of collaboration only realized by niche businesses?
