Jobs for Robots; Jobs for People?

Posted October 12, 2011 8:18 AM

Recently released data shows that the robotics industry has had its best quarter in six years, growing by 41% in the first half of 2011. That growth surely means jobs in the robotics industry—does it take away jobs from people in the industries using the robots? Or does it make the users more efficient and able to grow, creating jobs in other areas of the operation? How have automation technologies affected job growth at your company?

We see movies like the Matrix, in which robots/computers take over.

No one dares delve into the reality of the rage that can come from humans when they realize they have been replaced by a machine.

Combine that with thirst and hunger......................the machines don't stand a chance............................nor do the humans.

I've come to the conclusion, from anecdotal evidence, that here in the US the gov't is providing much of the impetus for replacing personnel with robots, or expanding operations with robots rather than humans.

After all, an employer doesn't have to worry about gov't mandates about employee relations with robots(yet); ie, health care, OSHA, EPA, and a myriad other agencies meddling in business. Many businesses have money to hire but the uncertainty is either making them wait, or find other solutions to their staffing problems. Thus, robots.

Just another example of "unintended consequences", IMO. It would be nice if a survey could be performed to validate exactly why robot sales have soared.

It's a little more than ironic...........................................unions are the driving force behind robots.

Talk about unintended consequences.

Oops, the US is broke.

But why should that matter? I'm a blue collar union worker, and I deserve to make $65,000 a year and retire at 48 with full benefits. It's the greedy rich people that are stealing everything!!!!! It's just not fair.

I'm just a little guy.....................I'm going to vote for someone that's out for the little guy.

What a joke.

Hooray for us blue collar workers err Robots!!!

I think a robot may replace 3 production workers, however it takes 3 skilled workers

to keep the robot up and running. This may not be a break even situation???

Don't vote for cult members......

Similar to robots replacing people due to "unions","educated engineers" in work places in some third world countries are replaced by "technician engineers" due to madness of "CEO"s who don't like intelligent people but like "kiss the ass" attitude. With those countries the developed world has full diplomatic relations and give even military aid although human and worker's rights are suppressed and "draconian" legislation are enforced with backing of USA and world bank simply because the government adopt a "free market economy" where local producers cannot sell their products.

Robots are accurate, not getting tired and do not speak against officers giving commands that's why companies like them. But it can malfunction due to lightning and other electrical disturbances or component failure.

Here in Britain all the cars made here are built by robots, but the smaller details like bolting the engine to the chassis, and the electrics have to be installed by humans, and this works very well, but when the day comes that robots take over the workforce, there will be gigantic repercussions. We have nearly three million unemployed as it is here in Britain, and I cannot believe that the workers in this country would allow businesses to sack these workers and install robots in their place, all hell would brake loose!

Labour, or working for a living, is an invention of humans. It is rapidly becoming obsolete as all of our inventions eventially do. Soon there will be no "job" that cannot be done better and more efficiently by a machine. Soon machines will be monitored and repaired by other machines. At that point we can stop working for a living, those who enjoy what they are now paid to do can continue to do that as a hobby. The rest of us can do what ever we want. Travel, write poetry, paint, sculpt, write, in other words create the things machines are still unable to even come close to.

The problem is getting from here to there without a civilization ending revolution.

One interesting offshoot of the "new world order" is that those not bright enough to entertain themselves will die of boredom, thereby raising the averge IQ considerably.

Money for what? If the entire production system is automated who do I have to pay?

Money is another invention that could soon be obsolete.

I would much rather find a replacement for some jobs.
