Falling Space Junk

Posted November 16, 2011 6:51 AM

Falling space junk has made news headlines recently. Reports invariably cite "experts" who reassure the public there is no reason to worry. If that's true, why do they always add the caveat that it's good to be 'aware' of tumbling spacecraft? Tens of thousands of man-made objects are presently orbiting the earth. If "what goes up must come down," shouldn't there be more concern?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Aerospace Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Aerospace Technology today.

Nope.

Besides, there's nothing we can do to prevent them from falling, and if I get hit, I'll never know what happened.

I view it as a worry about things you have a chance of controlling situation.

Anything else is a waste of your time. And health.

Will the insurance companies pay for damages caused by falling objects?.

It depends upon the policy wording. Many have exclusions for aircraft damage, as these are covered by the policy on the aircraft itself and the pilot, also those falling as a result of war, riot, etc.

Think of it like a cosmic lottery you probably won't get hit but if you ever do and you happen to survive you are set for life. Also you probably need to make a plan to avoid riding in cars and make a faraday cage for lightning storms those kill WAY more people.

This reminds me of a Handelsman cartoon of a guy looking at his trashed car. The insurance adjuster tells him, "Read your policy. Mindless vandalism by disadvantaged sociopaths fall under the definition of 'Acts of God.'"

Some people call a lightening also as an "act of God" because it may bypass a tall object and strike a shorter structure nearby or in the same structure. Even the Tsunami, earthquake and nuclear accident in Japan should be called an "an act of God" because they aid and abett killing of thousands of innocent civilians in another country

No, no need for concern. There's too much to worry about and I am maxed out.
