Have You Been Burned by Counterfeits Yet?

Posted November 24, 2011 10:29 AM

In today's cost-conscious environment, where a large portion of the production of parts sold in the U.S. is performed offshore, conditions are ripe for counterfeiting at all levels of commercial supply. At the very least, counterfeits are a nuisance, but in the worst case they could be extremely dangerous. Have you experienced an increase in counterfeiting discoveries in your professional or personal life?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electrical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electrical Components today.

The primary reason counterfeits exist is because the originals are grossly over-priced. That is not to say that I condone counterfeiting. Just that, if you are going to make an issue of the phenomenon, you should at least acknowledge why it is successful.

Currently going through a recall right now, prime vendor got snookered by a supplier's supplier.

And in fact they meet spec and operate fine, just don't have what antique dealers call provenance.
