Are You Ready for Winter?

Posted December 06, 2011 9:04 AM

If you run a plant in a geography that has to contend with harsh weather, you know that winter brings its own particular challenges. Do you have a supply of salt and sand for the parking lots and sidewalks? Are rules in place for when and how to remove snow and ice from the roof? Are the pipes protected from freezing? Most importantly, do you have the right personnel to keep your plant running smoothly when the weather outside is frightful?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plant & Facilities Engineering, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plant & Facilities Engineering today.

Remove the snow and ice? Why would we do that? They act as an insulating layer and whilst it's frozen up there, the rain doesn't leak in...

(I'm not joking...)

uuummm...it gets HEAVY! We have roofs collapse here every year from the weight. A few feet of wet snow weighs many tons on a large roof!

Dunno. It's summer in the Southern Hemisphere, BTW.

As I live in the great white north, our facility is in the location you describe. The facility must be able to handle the snow and ice on the roof or it couldn't be built here as per code. You certainly don't want anyone up there removing same, for fear of damaging the roof.

Snow and ice removal from the sidewalk and parking lots are usually handled by an outside contractor and not by our staff, but we do make sure additional salt and sand is on hand in case things get slippery.

In our climate you simply don't put yourself in a position were pipes could freeze. You would have them insulated from the cold or filled with a medium that doesn't freeze.

The few things that we need to be prepared for, are the cold and the wind. We usually need to wrap and seal off summer air intakes and make sure the door seals are in good condition. Having someone in the fall check out our heating equipment is also a must.

So when your here and outside, put on your toques, mits and snowtires. You might also want to dig out the ice scraper folks, cause winter is here.

Mark all your walkways, parking lots and drives so the plow operator knows where the edges are. Also designate an area for the snow to be piled or contract for it's removal and disposal.
