Meet the Moderator and Blogger: LakeGrl

Posted February 03, 2012 12:00 AM by SavvyExacta

LakeGrl writes for several CR4 blogs and tends to leave readers with a question or two to answer. She is also a CR4 moderator.

Tell me about yourself (major, college, work experience)

CIS degree, Accounting and Business Mgt. majors and psychology studies. FMCC and Empire State College. I have worked in the medical field, accounting field, and currently electronic media and graphics.

Why did you choose to moderate/blog?

It's a chance to give in to my frustrated English teacher tendencies / I love to write and I get to share experiences and research with others.

Favorite part about moderating/blogging?

Moderating is like weeding a garden, getting rid of the bad stuff so the good stuff can flourish. / Learning such interesting stuff and sharing my experiences with others.

Blogging topics: How do you choose?

Basically what interest me and also what I have had to research. I especially like topics related to the medical field, horticulture and animals - how they have benefited science and engineering design.

Favorite part about CR4?

There is so much to learn. I really love the humor and comaraderie that develops when discussing a subject or answering a question.

What would you say is the most interesting thing about you?

Some say I am a good listener, others find in interesting that I have recently set a goal of swimming across as many lakes as I can. I have so far made it across Caroga and Sacandaga.

What are your hobbies?

I love to swim, kayak, hike, snow shoe and bike. I make cards out of scraps of paper and material along with stamping. I enjoy writing, reading a good book, watching an old black and white movie, especially an old western and painting on glass. I am trying to learn Arabic and how to play a violin.

One word that best describes you?

Conscientious

What are 5 things you can't live without?

Love, Faith, Family, Friends, and Coffee in the morning.

Thanks for sharing your interests and the photography. I share your passion for kayaking, hiking, and biking. Not enough snow here in central Illinois for snowshoes.I am a retired psychiatric RN with an MA in counseling. Love to bug the engineers with another viewpoint. I learn a lot too. Thanks for keeping the site up.

Nice to meet you. Your photos are outstanding. The gardener metaphor has been very useful for my career, I'm sure it will help you with yours. Milo

I can't take credit for all of the photos, but I can tell you where they are - the top of the mountain is near Lake Placid, the second is the upper Hudson River, the photo of the loons is entitled "Loons on an Adirondack Lake" by Michael French. I found them by searching for images of the Adirondacks on Google.

My avatar image is of me in a canoe on Caroga Lake early in the morning back in October, 1998. That is the first time I saw a loon on that lake, now they can be found on many lakes in the Adirondacks. They are such interesting birds. I love watching them play and feed their young and hearing them call to each other.

Hi LakeGrl, Thanks for sharing - good to get to know more about you. For the non-US here: what are CIS and FMCC ?

Jealous about the kayaking and lake swimming. Have done both in my time - struggling with arthritis at the moment...but I haven't sold the kayaks!

CIS stands for Computer Information Systems and FMCC is a community college in the foothills of the Adirondacks called Fulton Montgomery Community College.

Swimming is very good for arthritis, especially if you can find a pool that is heated. My Mom still swims at 93 and it keeps here heart and lungs strong even with severe arthritis.

Don't sell the kayaks, I am sure you will be able to use them at some point. I think they are easier to maneuver than a canoe.

Working on dealing with the associated fatigue so I can get up earlier enough, do what I need to before work and make it to the pool...evening swimming isn't an option.

I used to swim upto a mile every work day (depended on how slow the desk was letting us in at/after 0700; I had to be out of the pool at 0730 to get to work on time) until the RA kicked in. Had to stop because I couldn't lift or circle my shoulders. Have got the movement back :o) so now working on mornings...

Thanks for the encouragement! :oD

There are protocols that might help. Don't know if you've checked out The Road Back Foundation. That hold promise. I have controlled RA with natural means. As you know, the pain can be a real bear. I hope you find some relief and possible control/reversal.

Welcome.

Forgive me. When I look at these pictures I remember instances in my life depicted in them -- just enjoying without talking. Wanting to share it is what leads to blogs, etc. Hope you find like-minded souls here.
