The People's New Power

Posted January 12, 2012 7:07 AM

First, Bank of America. Then Verizon. Both corporations repealed plans to levy new fees on customers because of backlash on social media sites. What company will be next to bow to the strength of social media? Or, to turn positive this new power of the people? Did we see social media hit its peak at the end of 2011, or will Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace continue to grow in their power to force corporations to deal — proactively rather than reactively — with the consuming public and customer bases?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

Backlash via social media is immediate and spreads very quickly. People join in, often without really understanding the issue. They feel like they're getting screwed by "the man", even though they don't know who "the man" is or what they're getting screwed about. There are "smart" people out there, but most others are hunkered down in mom's basement waiting for dinner to be served and prefer to be anonymous [no reference to any Anonymous Posters here].

Companies would be wise to listen to what the people are saying. But listen carefully.

Personally, I don't use social media. I prefer the old-fashioned methods of face-to-face and letter writing. I've submitted written complaints to the Presidents of Companies about their products or services and as long as I've stuck to the facts and can back them up, without going into a "I'm tired of being screwed by the man" rant, I usually get what I ask for. I've also met with the local managers of national companies and enjoyed similar success.

Here's a good example of electronic backlash directed at a U.S. bill via a technology reporting website.

WARNING: may contain language not suitable for work.

Granted, not all electronic protestors are like the people commenting. You can substitute BoA, Verizon or any other corporation for U.S. government and the result would probably be the same: you get a group of pimply-faced, basement-dwelling people joining in to dilute the real message and incite another OWS.

Thankfully, there are sane people out there that choose to take a more productive approach.

It doesn't make much sense to spend a lot of money on advertising and then nullify it with a bad idea, especially when another company has just made a similar mistake. When money is tight, customers will vote with their feet, and customers nowadays are talking to each other.

The social media remains a double edge sword, which can both do well to provide instant feedback on any business or government policy decision, and distort the truth when an intended attack or distortion goes viral. Statements are not vetted and there is no effective way to hold authors accountable for untruths or distortions.

As long as this media remains free and unregulated, it should continue to grow and have a positive net effect for those who choose to use it. If regulated and controlled (and can be mass manipulated), it will likely decline as fast or faster than "the network evening news".

Corporations and other businesses need to understand that we are in the Information Age where the customer is "king". It is no longer the manufacturers or businesses only that dictate what is made or what service is given.

With the availablilty of information about goods/services etc. and the ability to disseminate that information to a large group of people very quickly, companies need to be very careful how they operate in regard to this new consumer. Like was said in a previous post "customers vote with their feet" and if they don't feel like they are receiving high value and good, honest, fair service they will go elsewhere and also tell lots of other potential customers of their dissatisfaction.

This can also go the other way where a great many people can hear about a great value product or service.

This is a great component of the free enterprise, capitalist system. There is a symbiotic relationship between business and consumers. Everyone benefits when the process is working properly.

The social media will continue to rise in it's exposure and use by the public. As in anything, one needs to be very careful where they get their information before acting. Just because something is posted does not mean it is credible, especially when it is "anonymous". That is where true relationships come into play. We accept people's advice or information because they are trustworthy with us.

Businesses, who for the most part oppose increasing regulation and taxes, would best understand the majority of customer' needs & demands by avoiding the highly politicized internet media sites (both progressive and conservative).

Bailouts=bad behavior.

Once businesses become considered, "to big to fail", they will do anything they want.......................and we will pay to keep them alive.
