Looks like one of the specialty WWII English tanks specially designed for the D-Day landings to overcome beach obstacles (like barbed wire).

There's some video of one of these 'carpet laying' tanks using the attachment to cross barbed wire at about 1:00 in this advert for a DVD.

Re: What Is It? for 2/19/12

It's a WWII British mine sweeper mounted on a "Churchill" tank chassis......there are heavy duty chains located all around the roller spool which flail about to detonate mines in it's path, rather then the tank's threads doing the job.

These were operated by British Royal Army Engineers throughout the latter part of the war...

I personally don't agree with your comment as the "Mines Flail" tanks looked more like this:-

Although I have to agree that there is a certain resemblance, especially in the way it is carried....

The picture above came from here:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mine_flail

There are links to other strange tanks including the one really in question here:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobart%27s_Funnies

Where it is fully described as:-

Bobbin - A reel of 10-foot (3.0 m) wide canvas cloth reinforced with steel poles carried in front of the tank and unrolled onto the ground to form a "path", so that following vehicles (and the deploying vehicle itself) would not sink into the soft ground of the beaches during the amphibious landing.

Thats the one I am betting on!!!

This is the post war Toad built on the Churchill chassis. The Churchill chassis was used as the basis of a vast array of specialist engineer vehicles mainly because of the side hatches and large crew compartment. However I don't think the Churchill was used much, if at all, as a flail in WW2.

In the earlier part of the war the Scorpion, based on the Matilda II, was used. Later a flail based on the Grant was used. The main flail tanks from D-day on-wards were the Crabs based on the Sherman. The Churchill chassis went on to be used for a range of post war engineer vehicles including the Toad shown above.

I believe that it is an anti-land mine detonator. The arms would be lowered and the discs are connected with rows of chains strung across between them, when the discs are rotated the chains flail at the ground detonating buried land mines. I've seen video of these in action back in WW II.

Your answer is incomplete and therefore misleading. Look on this website:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobart%27s_Funnies

....and you will find the same picture and a full explanation adding "with Bobbin" to yours.

The Bobbin provided a way of moving heavy tanks over sand and other "shifty" surfaces, as its basically a rolled up "road surface".....

I did post this before, you may not have read it.....

this is the first mechanised track layer, used during WW2, the idea is STILL used and was extremely efficient in the Falklands War. Usually the Royal Engineers have this machine and now it lays a plastic composite 3 meter wide 40 meter long track in about 30 seconds.

The downside.. a bitch to repair.. I was in the REME attached to the RE's.
