A Gigantic Comet-like Dwarf Galaxy Discovered

Posted February 12, 2012 1:46 PM

From The Daily Galaxy --Great Discoveries Channel: Sci, Space, Tech:

A UCLA team has used a unique telescope to discover a previously unknown companion to the nearby galaxy NGC 4449 (image below), which is some 12.5 million light years from Earth. The newly discovered dwarf galaxy had escaped even the illuminating eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 4449B is stretched into a gigantic "S" so large that if one end were placed at the center of the Milky Way, the other end would reach all the way to the sun's position. In fact, NGC 4449B is the largest dwarf galaxy known in the "local group" that also includes the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy.

For anyone like me who wondered where NGC 4449 is located (because the stupid article didn't give coordinates or even name the constellation it is in) I looked it up and then checked my copy of Starry Night Pro to see when it could be viewed.

NGC 4449 is in the constellation Canes Venatici at Right ascension 12h 28m 11.9s, Declination +44° 05′ 40". Visually in the sky, it is located roughly at the radius point of the imaginary arc formed by the 3 main stars in the handle of the 'Big Dipper'. This time of year it rises in the NE at around 7 to 9 PM (depending on your latitude) and is up in the sky high enough to see with a telescope by about 10 PM. It crosses the meridian at about 3:30 AM local time.

And yeah, there is something odd about referring to it as a 'giant dwarf' galaxy. Maybe that's where jumbo shrimp originally came from.
