Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Humphrey’s Controlled-Compression Engine

Posted February 16, 2012 9:00 AM by dstrohl

David Greenlees over at The Old Motor came across this photo of Ira B. Humphrey of Denver demonstrating his variable-compression engine, fitted to a 1949 Oldsmobile, and did a little digging to see what made the Humphrey engine tick.

Are blog entries required/demanded at certain intervals?

Is the punishment for a late blog entry much more severe than the punishment for throwing together a blog that links to a page that wasn't read (or at least understood) as evidenced by the complete mismatch of the link (and blogs title) with a picture and video of something almost completely unrelated.

I would have given, benefit of the doubt and assumed that the wrong picture had been copied and pasted...except a point was made to encourage everyone to 'read the whole article and watch the whole video'.... and while a sentence hardly qualifies as an article, the killer is that there is no video of the variable compression engine.

I can't escape the feeling that this was slapped together expecting blog readers to be interested in something the blog writer couldn't be bothered to read or watch.

If you click on the link above you will reach a page that is about other things, but it also includes a related video. Scroll down and it's the fifth thing on the original entry.

Nope. No related video. The only video corresponds to the picture accompanying this blog. It has nothing to do with a variable compression engine. The only commentary on the video is basically 'Wtf'...

I have searched both the original link and the link that page provides for a video on the subject but can find none. Perhaps I am overlooking it, if so please give me some more detail on where it might be found.....

The existence of a video is dubious given the age of the article ultimately linked....

I investigated this further and you were right - the wrong photo was used. The video was for something else. The information has been updated in the original blog entry.

Admitting and correcting a public mistake is a sign of good character.
