100-Year-Old Lightbulb Unearthed From Time Capsule Still Works

Posted March 29, 2012 12:55 PM

From Popular Science - New Technology, Science News, The Future Now:

Century-Old Lightbulb GE Modern lightbulbs may be getting slightly more environmentally conscious (or at least having unexpected things stuffed into them), but it's still equal parts impressive and depressing that a 100-year-old lightbulb discovered by GE (whose archives are pretty amazing) in a time capsule still works perfectly well when plugged into a circa-2012 socket.

It hasn't been used for 100 years. Assuming it worked before being put in the capsule, no reason why it shouldn't work 100 years later.

Just think................100 years from now, time capsules will be super fund sites..................just in case any mercury leaked out of the CFLs.

None of the "kids" in a recent class I was leading even knew what a superfund site was!

I guess if you just ignore that stuff people forget about it...problem solved.

p.s. The parking lot for my building has a 20 acre superfund site next to it with warning signs posted on the perimeter. People just need to look around a little.

I worked at a ball bearing plant back in the late 70s, that became a superfund site. It still sits empty today. Fence around it and overgrown with weeds. I wonder what happened to the superfunds?

Great!

and I have replaced the 40 + cfl's, in my house, at least twice in the past 5 years.

PS, don't go cheap and buy them at walmart.

...amazing! And I bet the print/writing on any paper that was not exposed to the elements could still be read as well...well maybe not by some of today's graduates.
