Inside the Navy's Newest Spy Sub

Posted May 30, 2012 7:27 AM

From Gizmodo:

The Navy's newest fast-attack submarine is speeding down the Florida coast, on its way to its commissioning ceremony in its namesake state, at 15 knots. And it's getting outraced by dolphins.

For those of you reading the just the tag line, here's a good tidbit.

Much like your vehicle in which there is some optimum speed at which the MPG is maximum, submarines also have these optimum speeds (one surfaced and one submerged). The US Navy is well aware of these and for routine transit purposes, subs usually travel at this speed.

Interesting to note that the article mentioned the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) operated by General Electric. It is located in Niskayuna NY, a suburb of Schenectady. Additionally, GE once ran the Kesselring site, located outside Saratoga Springs NY, where they train US Navy Nuclear Engineers (Submariners) how to operate the sub nuke plants. Both sites are (I believe) operated by Lockheed-Martin ( or is it Betchtel???) now instead of GE. I'll have to ask my brother-in-law since he works a KAPL....

I used to hold a DOE/USN clearance for both sites as I did A lot of structural engineering work there in the 1980's and 1990's.

FRY BABY FRY!!!

Yes, I believe Bechtel now runs both sites...I lived in the Albany, Schenectady area for several years, quite some time ago now, in the late 60's early 70's...

SolarEagle, that's pretty kewl that you know about KAPL and lived in Albany-Schenectady for a while!

Are you originally from the Capital District? I grew up in Burnt Hills, north of Scotia and Schenectady. I'm sure you've heard of it....

If you're familiar with Schenectady, than you most likely know of Mike's Hot Dogs on Erie Blvd. in the Electric City! Been operating there since 1947.....I grew up on those "Dogs with the Works" (since I was old enough to remember 'em...maybe 3 Y.O.?)!!!! Best damn hot dog sauce on the planet, and you can't get them anywhere else! Actually it's a Greek Brown sauce, not a chili sauce, and contains no tomato products....I've been able to copy it pretty closely (well, almost!) after experimenting for years trying to get it right!

Time to do a road trip up to Schenectady and visit Mike's.....I'm getting a craving for 3 dogs right now!!! hehehehehe

A great tool for maintaining freedom.

"They that are on their guard and appear ready to receive their adversaries, are in much less danger of being attacked than the supine, secure and negligent". Franklin, Benjamin

"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." John Adams

"We fight not to enslave, but to set a country free, and to make room upon the earth for honest men to live in." Paine, Thomas

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure. Jefferson, Thomas

I included these quotes because they apply to the development and use of equipment like this sub. It takes a mindset and resolve to use it and the associated risk involved like the last quote says.

Thank you facilitiesmgr for those quotes. I learned them back in High School. Somehow I don't think they teach them to the kids now days. Always important to remember those wise words, lest we forget........

You're correct about this kind of material not being taught, for the most part. There are some good teachers who incorporate thinking like this but I think they are few and far between. It is to our detriment generationally that it isn't.

We have Homeschooled our 3 kids and the youngest is 17 and it seems like History, legacy and foundational truths are much more strongly emphasized in that setting rather than government or even private schools.
