What's wrong with trees ??

It's not exactly clear from the article, but it suggests this research is being used to counter AGW by GHG's which of course is a bunch of balderwash subject to debate. However, if this was being used to carbonate soft drinks or make dry ice, then not so bad.

Personally I'm hoping that this will lead to a practical solution

It would be great to produce a useful by-product that could be re-used downstream or up-stream whichever it is to replace the fossil fuel feedstock being used in the first place.
