I can't believe it's been nearly two years since we test-drove the electric Ford Focus prototype.
Now, with the production version on the market, Ford invited Rob and I
back down to take the finished version for a spin at Daniel's Broiler on
Lake Union, the site of our original test drive. With its production
temperament all dialed in, it feels like the Focus Electric is definitely good to go.
As a five-seater hatch and one of the handful of pure electrics on the market (the Chevy Volt doesn't count), the Ford Focus almost inevitably invites comparison to the Nissan Leaf.
I can say for sure that I like the Focus better. It's got keyed
"ignition" and an actual gearshift, none of the pseudo-iPhone interface
and video-game-controller nubs that the competition is equipped with. It
feels more solid and less silly, more like an actual car than a
gimmicky toy. In this sense, Ford was probably right to take their time
in getting their electric to market, surely learning from the
shortcomings of the Leaf and the electric Prius and feedback from the early adopters.
