2012 Ford Focus Electric: Ready for Prime Time

Posted June 22, 2012 9:00 AM by CarDomain

I can't believe it's been nearly two years since we test-drove the electric Ford Focus prototype. Now, with the production version on the market, Ford invited Rob and I back down to take the finished version for a spin at Daniel's Broiler on Lake Union, the site of our original test drive. With its production temperament all dialed in, it feels like the Focus Electric is definitely good to go.

As a five-seater hatch and one of the handful of pure electrics on the market (the Chevy Volt doesn't count), the Ford Focus almost inevitably invites comparison to the Nissan Leaf. I can say for sure that I like the Focus better. It's got keyed "ignition" and an actual gearshift, none of the pseudo-iPhone interface and video-game-controller nubs that the competition is equipped with. It feels more solid and less silly, more like an actual car than a gimmicky toy. In this sense, Ford was probably right to take their time in getting their electric to market, surely learning from the shortcomings of the Leaf and the electric Prius and feedback from the early adopters.

That's it? Range? Performance? BATTERY LIFE? Charge times? Battery life expectancy? Battery technology? AC or DC motor?

Range, performance and charge time were discussed, albeit very basically, in the full article.

The rest wasn't discussed, but it doesn't appear that this was the aim of the article. The author could have talked a bit about the very dominant "Energy Coach" display in the instrument panel that was shown in one photo, and a little about the transmission would have been nice too....the author went on and on about the interior and how the use of real leather was a full on eco-crime.

I figure it was written for the cafe crowd over a latte.....

Thanks for the heads up, saves me wasting time reading the full article.
Dunno where they get journalists from these days...
Probably an indication of the fact that most people don't understand what they are selling (or buying) anymore.

I didn't see anything about pricing or warranty. It looks like a contender against the Leaf though. Doubt it would meet my price to value criteria. Probably too long to pay for the price differential, even though I keep my vehicles until they wear out. I am hoping my Dodge minivan holds out until they offer a natural gas version. I would consider an electric if I ever buy another small car.

Wow! 76 to 100 miles on a plug in! I am really impressed that the Leaf and now the Focus have shown extremely well on their mega investments. I just can not say enough about how smart those companies are......... Oh, by the way try this......1968 6-month Test of MARS II Electric Car by General Motors and Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory showing a range of 146 miles on a charge --using the same battery-- in 1968 Great Transcontinental Electric Race between California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) won by Caltech in a Volkswagon Van equipped with Lead Cobalt Batteries and an EFP electric motor. Ho-hum.... it is the battery folks, the battery.

You make a very good point! What has happened to all the rosy speculation on battery advancements? I would think that standard lead acid batteries might come close to these ranges. The EV1 got 60 mpg with lead acid, and almost double with nickel metal hydride batteries on the EV2. http://www.greencar.com/articles/20-truths-gm-ev1-electric-car.php Sounds like more people ought to buy up light vehicles and convert them.

"mpg" really? I think you mean mpc. "c" for charge.

Have to change the way we think...

Now, the Tesla does a lot more than this with a 3.5 hour charge time.....that would explain the 6 figure price tag I guess.

I still haven't been able to find out how they aircondition these electric cars. It doesn't get spoken about at all and Tesla didn't bother answering when I emailed them a question about it....maybe its the EV industries dirty little secret. Range figures are with the a/c turned off perhaps?

Thanks for the correction. MPC is the correct acronym, and I have never heard of it. I guess we need something like MPC/XCT given the available charging system.

.....behold the birth of a yet another acronym.

MPC/XCT would be the convenience factor? How far can it go per minute of charge time....

I meant X as the unknown, since charging systems are a variable. Somewhat true of natural gas compression systems also.
