Mixed Signals: Smart Phone Sensors Recruited to Deliver Indoor GPS

Posted July 02, 2012 11:13 AM

From Scientific American:

Instead of focusing on a single type of signal to map indoor areas, researchers at Duke University and Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology are developing software to help smartphone users find their way by gathering information from a number of different signal types. Their UnLoc system-short for unsupervised indoor localization-gathers signal data using Wi-Fi antennas, cellular radios, compasses, gyroscopes and accelerometers.

The existing IPSs are directed at asset tracking applications more than indoor navigation assistance.

I hear what you're saying though. The proliferation of on board GPS automobile navigation apparatus is making people less aware of where they are in space and enables those who should never leave their homes, for fear of getting lost, to dwell among us. It can't be good.

For one minute the bizarre concept of trackable assets needing their own location awareness loomed large; it was the <...Smart Phone...> label in the original posting that caused the confusion. It has passed now, though.

"I don't know why they wouldn't question driving into a puddle that doesn't seem to end,"

Probably texting as they drove trusting blindly.....
