After last week's post on the upcoming Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild reunion,
we heard from reader Dan Bruckbauer, whose older cousin, Jerry
Chambers, participated in the guild's design contest and gave Dan the
booklet that he received with instructions on designing and building a
model car for the contest. We found it rather fascinating, not for the
procedures involved in creating a model car in those days before CAD and
3D printers (nowadays you could probably bypass every single step in
this booklet, including the one on using your imagination), but for the
fact that GM, through the Guild, so willingly taught these fundamentals
to Guild members across the country. Of course, it paid off for GM in
the designs and designers that rose to prominence through the Guild, but
it doesn't appear that many automakers are so willing to encourage kids
to get their hands dirty in a similar fashion nowadays.
