Man Makes Working $9 Bicycle Out of Cardboard

Posted July 30, 2012 11:19 AM

From DVICE:

There are a number of interesting bike designs made from a variety of materials, but one factor always held true: they're not generally made of cardboard. Well, designer Giora Kariv wasn't having that, so he went ahead and built a bike out of cardboard for $9.

Interesting, but cardboard? More like cardboard/paper honeycomb that is quite strong compared to cardboard, as in cardboard box.

Still, it's probably very light.

Is this really functional or just a nice done mock-up?

I question what happens when you need to come to an emergency stop.

what happens when going downhill and it becomes steep.

In short: what braking force can be applied.

It sure requires decent supervision and drive by wire.

It can't be real otherwise you would constantly have dogs and people-pleasers jumping through the hoops as you ride.

It's a concept vehicle, meant to transverse water and/or land....but then this was from '08 so who knows...In any case I don't see it catching on, but the design is awesome...

Here's a Tron cycle you can buy for too much money...

It might have cost him $9 if his time has no value, but it looks like many hours have gone into it.

A bicycle out of cardboard? Big deal, on the way to work this morning I saw an entire apartment complex under an overpass made entirely of cardboard.

I don't really believe that the total cost is $9. Perhaps with enough of "scrap" parts from other bicycles he was able to claim that the first prototype cost $9. How much do you think the tires, braking system, chain, crank-set, pedals, etc. would cost. He has cleverly hidden all of these parts behind the white cardboard, but this is what actually makes the bicycle work. The laminated cardboard composite frame has some expense & certainly a lot of labor as well. I don't see that he could scale up to production at $9 per bike.
