Bonhams set several records at its Goodwood Festival of Speed auction
on June 29, headlined by Tim Birkin's 1929 4-1/2-Litre supercharged
blower Bentley single seater. When it sold for £4.5 million (with
premium £5,042,000 or US$7,907,530), it became not only the world's most
expensive Bentley, but also the most expensive British car ever sold at
auction. The auction's $34,500,000 total makes it the largest old-car
auction ever held in England, and I believe Bonhams' biggest old car
auction.
The folks at Bonhams are so proud of the fact that they've done a
special video with head of department James Night, showing the genteel,
yet packed and electric tent, and providing some interesting analysis of
the bidding. It's not entirely clear to me if the bidder was on the
phone with Rupert Banner; in the room; or represented by someone else. Bidding is in Pounds Sterling. Yikes.
