Upon further review, the officials decided that the port-o-potties are ON the goal line, so technically this does count as a touch-down.

Chess anyone?

Sorry, I'm not that good at it, or find the patience for, or even smart enough, or even have the extended hours to study it, and to learn the strategies of this wonderful game. (Now, Checkers, or even Chinese Checkers is totally different.)

I can truly appreciate that it is one the most dynamic games on this planet, as well as a game with substantial history and importance, and almost envy the masters of it.

Now perhaps if I can take on a 5 year old in a serious match - "your move, Master Bates." - then I may have a chance of victory.

PW's is either very old-school or hasn't played in a while. The kt notation got binned a few years back (in favour of N). Might be wrong, but a family member is obsessive about the game and leaves game records all over the place. They've yet to succeed in dragging me to the 'local' chess club (it's an hours drive), because I know full well that most of the pre-teens would thrash me ! I've no explanation why/how, but the game seems to click very will in a lot of youngsters heads. The Queen's Gambit is a fun read.

Conkers is much more fun. On a losing streak, I can 'accidentally' rap somebody's knuckles .

Nah, we only wear nut-guards in case of overswing. It's a legit tactic to quickly move yer conker and watch the strkers agony .

If memory serves, Blue Peter started all this with mass panic over clackers (#5). Last known player was Mick Fleetwood. A younger sis was distraught, but she got a new toy -no idea what they were called, but think of roller skates that had springs instead of wheels. She'd hop around like Skippy on acid. I don't think a single bout of playtime didn't result in grazes or impalement. As a much older bruv, it was well worth the money to keep her out of my hair.

Thanks for rekindling some of my fondest childhood memories of playing 'Chestnuts' (You Brits call them 'Conkers'), with my schoolmates at recess.

I used to bang a hole through them with a rusty nail, found at the local construction site, with a large rock, and then put them in a bag at the back corner of mom's freezer compartment, found some old twine from here or there, and then attempt total destruction upon my opponent's best offering of his 'weapon' that day. (the knots I made at the time were knot 'ship shape', but they did the job well enough for a seven year old young pup.)

I remember 'Kingsies' & 'Queensies' when at least half of or at least a quarter of your chestnut was still attached to your string, all the whilst annihilating your opponents best effort. - Good times and memories I'll always keep.

Just hoping that the kids today can enjoy that same kind of honest to goodness fun that we were privileged to be able to enjoy from such simple pleasures.

Rumour has it that the game is banned in UK schools today on Health & Safety grounds!

Rumour ?

Where did our childhood fun go ? There was a time when it didn't bloody matter. If somebody suffered grazed knees, they didn't think 'who do I blame, who can I sue. Simply got up and played. Mwahhhh - we live in a blame culture. Trying to explain to compemsation complainaents is a wasted time. Pah. Pet peev

Have you checked out the HSE Mythbusters? As far as I can make out most of it comes from head teachers & suchlike being scared sh1tless of being sued (or even being faced with an irate parent whinging about Little Johnny's nasty bruise) - so they blame the H&S regs - which in most of these daft cases don't exist.

Biggest problem now is the Horse Chestnut disease that is sweeping across from the Continent. So far it's not as devastating as Dutch Elm Disease, but the conker crops are poor this year.

Currently, I'm more worried about the Oaks...
