US Air Force's 1950s Supersonic Flying Saucer Declassified

Posted October 08, 2012 11:22 AM

From ExtremeTech:

Tighten the strap on your tinfoil hat: Recently declassified documents show that the US Air Force was working on, and perhaps had already built, a supersonic flying saucer in 1956. The aircraft, which had the code name Project 1794, was developed by the USAF and Avro Canada in the 1950s. One declassified memo, which seems to be the conclusion of initial research and prototyping, says that Project 1794 is a flying saucer capable of "between Mach 3 and Mach 4," (2,300-3,000 mph) a service ceiling of over 100,000 feet (30,500m), and a range of around 1,000 nautical miles (1,150mi, 1850km).

The 'recently' declassified USAF report on Project Silver Bug, also known as WS-606A, VZ-9, and Project 1794.

BAH! Who are they trying to kid?

This is clearly a faked report of a 'secret' USAF project. This report has been 'leaked' in the past, as I recall. It's purpose is to make the UFO crowd think that some government agency was flying all of those disk-shaped unidentified flying objects - rather than the actual aliens who were piloting them, one of whom crashed and was taken to Area 51.

I know this is true 'cause I read about it on the internet. Plus, my cousin's neighbor knew a guy who's brother-in-law worked on the program.

Somebodies pulling your leg. The object shown in the photo could barely get off the ground.

Yes, and the one pictured? Supersonic? Only when fueled with nitro-enriched, high-octane B.S.

It's a LameTech article. 'Nuff said.

I remember seeing footage of this "aircraft" barely being able to hover a few feet above the ground. Avro also developed the first delta wing aircraft. That plane could have changed Canada's military future. After our government scrapped that project, a lot of the engineers ended up with NASA.

I'm just wondering if anyone actually read the article. The VZ-9 Avrocar pictured is not the vehicle they claim could do mach 3-4.

In all fairness I read the whole mishmash. Having done so, I can only feel sad for these poor deluded persons that went to so much trouble to put this whole thing together. You can learn more about them here:

When the Army joined the efforts it took on its final name "Avrocar", and the designation "VZ-9", part of the US Army's VTOL projects in the VZ series.

The fact that LameTech put the pic up there alongside the word supersonic already speaks volumes in terms of their technical prowess and editorial judgement - and knowledge of aerodynamics. Why read further?

Oh, come on. That's much cooler than having a cut-away line drawing of a proposed concept on the cover.

Anyway, if you hover your cursor over the pictures in the article, they are are clearly identified.
