A Puzzling Puzzle

Posted October 30, 2012 11:50 AM by Mizuti

For your entertainment, here's a little puzzle for you all!

aHR0cDovL2ltZ3VyLmNvbS9FWEdDMQ==

This puzzle is pretty easy (though some believe none of you can solve it), but if there's enough interest in it, I'll put on a much more challenging one!

Oh, and please don't give hints to other members Go ahead and work together if you'd like. This one should be easy peasy with a little teamwork, and I'd like to be able to do harder ones in the future, so go ahead and collaborate!

Beats me! I see no pattern:

~It can't be a numerical-alphabetical code due to the presence of zero.

~The double equal sign has some significance in coding, but don't know the significance here.

~The upper-case and lower-case mixture must have a significance that I am not aware of.

<Oh, and please don't give hints to other members >

This hardly counts as a clue.

I can't wait for the moment when a superior mind comes along to solve this, thereby exposing my neural deficiency

Alright, I promised some hints, so here's some hints!

There are two hidden images, both are in the main post. One is in the string of letters, just use the other hint below to figure out where to go with that. The other can be more easily found using the hint on the first image. When you combine the two, you'll get a string of letters that you can plug into imgur and solve!

Also, I'm removing the "keep everything to yourself" stipulation. Collaboration is now tolerated!

Haha, fair enough.

I suppose I can relinquish a hint, though it might make things too obvious, or more confusing.

9 alphas + 26 upper case+ 26 lower case = 61. We need 3 more for base 64 but there is only an = sign extra. We need two more symbols.

This is the correct image, and you don't need an account. A big hint is that a lot of the puzzles I make revolve around getting the five alpha-numerical code that goes after an imgur link in order to find messages.

Anyways, that's half the picture, and there's a hint on the bottom of it

Bloody hell, are we getting into machine language now?

At first, I thought it might be somebody's record of a baseball game but I couldn't make that work. Since I never played the game and only went to a couple of games, that didn't rule it out.

Well, my thinking (in case anyone is following this) was:

The "source" (of the puzzle) was Mizuti.

Looking at his profile, his signature was: You caught me, 22!

So I tried Riz22

fail.

I found out what I did wrong the first time. I actually did look at the source code, but I searched for "hro" (part of the string) and when it didn't find it I went elsewhere.

I didn't notice it was "hr0" (zero not "oh")

This reminds me of "The Python Challenge".

The blog area is really just a placeholder so that I can gauge interest in these kind of puzzles. I'm starting to suspect that they'd be better off in a random thread than in a blog

I'll leave this alone until around 3:30 EST, then I'll divulge the answer.

You should allow for the facts that a) you're awake while a lot of the CR4 membership is asleep (globalspec!), and b) some of us are a little bit busy (watching football/working/making merry/dealing with 'orrible kids demanding sweetsmoney with menaces).

If there's any way you can do it, I'd suggest trying to give as many people as possible a reasonable chance. This would include not throwing in clues (or giving the answer) too quickly - let the slow and/or busy folks have a decent go. If possible, drip-feed the puzzle and the clues - how to manage this may pose a puzzle for you .

Jus' sayin'.

Doing some sort of edit to compensate for 'scroll overflow' might help. Post #1 was fine in itself, but more annoying than the puzzle.

Yes, I'm sulking because I didn't get it, but having to scroll l/r drives me (even more) insane..

I don't think I've yet seen a good explanation for part 1 to the solution, though the base 64 hint was OK. About the first thing I did was look at source on the page, and I missed the flipping line reffering to imgur ! (d'oh). I blame it all on my frustration at scrolling the screen.

The notion of such challenges becoming a regular feature is fun - you may have lost a fair bit of input from people who share l/r scroll annoyance syndrome. It may also be worth posting the 'answer' at top of thread (as with challenge questions) - those solving it deserve highlighted credit. Although you acknowledged them, it may get lost on people (like me) who get bored of hitting the scroll bar.

More, please, ya geek ().

Just a normal thread to continue seeing what kind of interest level there was in this kind of stuff. The answer isn't posted, and there's additional hints in the comments, go ahead and see if you can solve it!
