3D Printed Biorobot Will Enter Your Gut to Track and Destroy Toxins

Posted November 17, 2012 1:24 PM

From ExtremeTech:

When researchers boast rather casually that making new variations of their invention is as simple as editing a CAD file, we might assume they are talking about a new sort of coffee mug, or perhaps a revolutionary spool for garden hose. Certainly such a simple and cost-effective design process could never give rise to something as complex as a bio-robot, a chimera of industrial gel and living tissue designed work inside the human body. However, after researchers at the University of Illinois set themselves the task of creating just such a robot, that's precisely what they did.

Again, and as is almost always the case, nowadays, the headline "3D Printed Biorobot Will Enter Your Gut to Track and Destroy Toxins" is at best a deliberate falsehood. There is no "WILL" do anything in the article. So saying that it WILL enter your gut (whether that thought is terrifying, tittilating, or tantalizing is up to your perspective) and do anything is misleading. The technology is nowhere near that point, nor does anything ELSE the author says indicate that it is.

All of that said, the strides being made in "growing machinery" are truly amazing. Being able to implant mouse heart cells into a matrix of BioGel, cause them to beat, and thus to actuate a motor-leg is amazing at least and absolutely fascinating in its capabilities.

But, WHY, oh WHY do the authors of pseudo-science articles, and worse, their EDITORS, feel it necessary to mask the wonderful work being done by lying about what hasn't been even attempted yet, as though that, too had already been accomplished?

I've truly come to the point where I'm almost ready to quit reading about technological or scientific advances, just because I'm so tired of having to weed out the self-serving DRECK from the truth that is so much more fascinating for it's very truth.

Just my personal view. End of rant.
