Juice and Germs in 3D

What do you get when you combine 3D printing, bacteria, and orange juice? A synthetic material that can be used in both medical and non-medical applications. A team from London Biohackspace has found a means to create a genetically-modified version of bacteria that can be turned on and off using only light. It has applications for human scaffolding, regeneration of organs that are diseased, and more in the medical arena. For non-medical applications, the material is very strong and could make paper products or electronics.

Didn't they develop something similar back in the late 80's thinking that it would replace electronic 1's and 0's with light 1's and 0's. That was also biological.
