Combining Control and Safety Leads to Cost Savings

New laws and standards now permit manufacturers to combine automation controls and safety functions in one system. The advantages can be substantial as wiring costs and cabinet space can be reduced, and systems are simplified. Other benefits, notes Kevin Colloton, GuardLogix marketing manager at Rockwell Automation, include software consolidation. Although some are hesitant that safety could be jeopardized by combining it with automation control, the risks can be minimized. According to this report from Control Engineering, careful design and specification of integrated systems is necessary to ensure that no operator is put at risk whatever failure occurs within the automation system.
