NASA, FAA Demonstrate Wireless Communication with Aircraft

Posted July 09, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

For the first time ever, a NASA team has conveyed aviation data, including route options and weather, to an airplane over a ground wireless network. The team used a prototype solution (AAtS) to send the information over a new wireless communication system called Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communications Systems (AeroMACS). This system is based on WiMAX wireless communication standards that uses different frequencies to enable ground connectivity. Together, AAtS and AeroMACS can improve situational awareness and reduce potential for human error, says the team. Future plans include testing AeroMACS with multiple airports.
