The Coming of Smart Microphones

In the future, voice may become the standard interface for controlling most devices. Key to that development will be smart microphones with built-in hardware and software to distinguish a voice message from background noise and echoes. Local processing of signals from an array of microphones using noise cancellation techniques isolates the voice command.

I would think there would be a problem in scaling down the size of a phased array for beamforming to be useful in devices such as cell phones. Most of the energy in a male voice is below 2 KHz. The wavelength of 2 KHz in air is about six inches, so most of the sounds in the male voice have a longer wavelength.
