John Glenn Dies at Age 95

Posted December 08, 2016 5:17 PM by wagman262

What thoughts do you have on the passing of John Glenn? Not an engineer, but certainly an iconic figure who rode into space on the accomplishments of engineers.

I remember when they interviewed him after his shuttle trip at 77 years old. He said they wouldn't let him space walk because they thought he might wander off. Great sense of humor!

He'll always be considered one of the great men of the early days of manned space exploration.

But I think he tarnished his reputation a bit with his space shuttle stunt, using his 'pull' as a US Senator to grab a seat on the shuttle.

It should be noted he was an engineer. From his bio:

After graduating from New Concord High School in 1939, he studied Engineering at Muskingum College. He earned a private pilot license for credit in a physics course in 1941.Glenn did not complete his senior year in residence or take a proficiency exam, both requirements of the school for the Bachelor of Science degree. However, the school granted Glenn his degree in 1962, after his Mercury space flight.

He didn't finish his degree originally because of World War II.

One of the true good guys. I'm listening to the local public radio station's morning political chat. The panelists are so pleased to have someone good to talk about for a change. Do we have any heroes in the making like John Glenn?

I'd like to hear from some younger CR4 readers, who will probably remember his trip on the shuttle.

My grandfather briefly co-piloted bombers for the Army during WWII, and John Glenn was one of his heroes. My brother spent some time in a high school honors program, and one of their special events was to have Glenn come give a talk about his recently published autobiography. My grandfather, who was maybe 75 at the time, was able to tag along and meet him. From what I heard they made some small talk and traded a few aviation stories, and Glenn signed his book for him.

RIP to a standup guy.

of all of the original astronauts, he was the one that tempered most of the others.

As one who practically grew up in the shadow of Langley Research Center (the original home of the manned spaceflight program) and eventually worked there for 12 years, the Mercury 7 were my first real live heroes after Hollywood cowboys and Super Man.

I used to play sick to stay home from school and listen to launches on my transistor radio in bed. And, of course, John Glenn's flight was the epitome of those times.

Godspeed Friendship 7. It will fly forever in my dreams and memories.

Definitely great man. I remember being in barbers chair on college campus watching it in B&W when he first went into space.
