Anti-Aging Breakthrough

Posted March 27, 2017 8:48 AM by Bayes

I came across this article and thought it was interesting...

UNSW scientists unveil a giant leap for anti-aging

UNSW researchers have made a discovery that could lead to a revolutionary drug that actually reverses ageing, improves DNA repair and could even help NASA get its astronauts to Mars. In a paper published in Science today, the team identifies a

critical step in the molecular process that allows cells to repair damaged DNA. Their experiments in mice suggest a treatment is possible for DNA damage from ageing and radiation. It is so promising it has attracted the attention of NASA, which believes the treatment can help its Mars mission.

While our cells have an innate capability to repair DNA damage ? which happens every time we go out into the sun, for example - their ability to do this declines as we age. The scientists identified that the metabolite NAD+, which is naturally present in every cell of our body, has a key role as a regulator in protein-to-protein interactions that control DNA repair. Treating mice with a NAD+ precursor, or "booster," called NMN improved their cells' ability to repair DNA damage caused by radiation exposure or old age.

"The cells of the old mice were indistinguishable from the young mice, after just one week of treatment," said lead author Professor David Sinclair of UNSW School of Medical Sciences and Harvard Medical School Boston. Human trials of NMN therapy will begin within six months. "This is the closest we are to a safe and effective anti-ageing drug that's perhaps only three to five years away from being on the market if the trials go well," says Sinclair, who maintains a lab at UNSW in Sydney.

Definitely legit! They have been making great strides in this area. Here's the same story from another website:

What I find really striking is that the research isn't looking for some sort of cosmetic Fountain of Youth but for ways to give former cancer patients a chance at a better life, or to enable long space missions. Not a silver bullet for rich people who want to live forever.

It is about time! I want this for my wife whom is suffering from cancer! I want to speed up her recovery, make her young all over again, so I will have someone to cook for me when I am 80. Is that selfish? BTW, I do the cooking, and the dishes of late.

I'm sorry to hear that, James.

I wonder what their plans are for human testing. Years in the future no doubt, though possibly you could inquire?

She is facing breast surgery tomorrow, then quickly a larparoscopic removal of a large colon polyp (at/near the cecum), and a right torn rotator cuff surgery.

We are hoping the radiation treatments will only be for a short spell, then she can have the other procedures...or one of the other procedures fits in before radiation.

Cheers, mate! Raise a pint in my stead, as I am totally off alcohol and carbs (except my oats).

My thanks to you and all the others who have expressed well wishes for Euletta.

She is a fighter. She has improved steadily from the groggy state she was in as returned from surgery. I have made her start her Vitamins: Women's Multivitamin (over 50) as per doctor's orders, Ester C (my orders), and Super B complex, although I could find no reference to NAD+ in that, I am pretty sure the precursors are there.

Today, she reports reduced aching, reduced swelling, and some improvement of her shoulder with the bad rotator cuff. This bodes well for her return to her normally tough, in my face, commanding self. Strangely enough, those appear to be the terms of endearment. I know that some of the things I have said recently just joking around with her, may come back in the form of a skillet session while I am sleeping.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife.

I am participating in a "Cancer Council Relay For Life" this weekend. I'll dedicate a couple of laps on her behalf.

The local news here in New South Wales (Australia) is that human testing could begin within 6 months.

I'm not sure but it could be someting about the active chemical being already present in people and not being synthetic.

Just an aside, UNSW stands for University of New South Wales.
