Guess the Architecture! for 4/4/2017

Posted April 04, 2017 2:00 PM

Does anyone recognize this building?

As I was drawing it, the texture reminded me of the Guess the Architecture for 11/22/2016. Perhaps one inspired that aspect in the other?

Is there much more to this building that's not in the sketch?

Stumped me. But that's not very hard to do.

It has many of the features of a Peter Barber design, but I'm not finding any matches.

Just the corner of the building, which has five of the small upper windows and three of the slightly larger bottom windows.

Looks like any of those single family dwellings in any big city, often affectionately known as, " The Projects ".

I my first guess was Frank Lloyd Wright, but I have nothing to back that up!

This week’s building was the Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor—a fairly well known building, with a less recognizable side. This structure is built on the only thermal springs in the Graubünden Canton in Switzerland, and it functions as a hotel and spa. According to the architect, “the idea was to create a form of cave or quarry like structure [while] working with the natural surroundings.” The baths can be found under a grass roof structure that is half buried into the hillside. The interesting texture can be attributed to “layer upon layer of locally quarried Valser Quarzite slabs,” and this stone “became the driving inspiration for the design, and is used with great dignity and respect."
