Solar Eagle was super close this week. This mosque (which has very similar domes to the one Solar Eagle guessed) is one of the domes of Bukhara, located in a different part of Uzbekistan. The Mir-i Arab Madrasah in Bukhara was built from 1535-1536 across from the Kalyan Mosque, which was built to accompany the Kalyan Mineret (both pictured). As described by Vladimir Lukonin and Anatoly Ivanof in Central Asian Art, the Mir-i Arab Madrasah “emanates, together with the mosque and the minaret facing it, incomparable grandeur.”

Solar Eagle’s mosque (the Bibi-Khanym Mosque) was built in Samarkand between 1399 and 1404, according to the University of Washington. The mosque commemorates the wife of Timur, a Turkic conqueror who established the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia, but it also was said to “symbolize [Timur’s] conquest of the world.”

The tile work you can see on the exterior of the domes and the rest of the mosque were typical of Timurid buildings. Inside, the “vaults supporting the domes from below were not only structurally complex but dazzlingly decorated with traditional Islamic “stalactites” (muqarnas).”

Unfortunately, the domes began collapsing in the fifteenth century. Since, the building has been restored, as you can see from Solar Eagle’s video; however it also looks in need of further upkeep.
