Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Petition Aims to Make the Pickup the National Vehicle of the United States

Posted October 12, 2017 9:00 AM by dstrohl

Here in America, we count the bald eagle as our national bird and baseball as our national pastime. The slot for national vehicle — if there were a slot for national vehicle to begin with — remains unfilled, however, so the backers of a new petition have proposed sanctifying the pickup truck as our national vehicle.

While clearly part of a marketing campaign, the Shell-backed petition started on We the People aims to provide official recognition to all pickups — not just those from a particular brand or even, apparently, those produced in the United States.

“The pickup truck exemplifies America’s resilience and the work it takes to continue to build our communities and support our farms, both which deserve to be recognized,” Megan Pino, a Shell brand manager, said in a press release announcing the petition.

Does the United States need an official vehicle? And if so, is it a Ford, Chevy or Dodge?

"It will have to have an Easy Rider rifle rack!"

With room for not one, not two, but THREE of your favorite rifles! Yes, sir.

Regarding trucks, I deliver more Toyota's than any other brand. I don't think we want the Toyota Tacoma to be our national vehicle ... though they do run forever and the resale value is really, really good.

Okay, you have my vote. Toyota Tacoma it is!

You're correct, it's the #1 selling vehicle in the US, but I deliver about 2-3 of them a year. I'm not sure why, but my clients prefer a Tacoma. I also deliver more Silverado's than F150's.

It's not a question of need, it's more a promotional branding type thing....

True, I get that but it seems like we are always celebrating "It's National (fill-in-the-blank-here) week/day/month etc. These things have been so over-done, it has diminished the significance. I look at it just like when your boss says everything is your first priority.

Having a "national vehicle" just seems like another pointless exercise.

Not to get too political here, but I wonder what would happen if someone started a movement to honor White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Heritage with a month-long celebration?
